Prof. Dean Dass was born in 1955, during an Iowa blizzard. His parents drove many miles that night and so he was born not on the family farm but in a hospital in Hampton. When he was a boy his maternal grandfather, Virgil Liittschwager, taught him to fish and hunt, and how to paint with oils. He studied art, philosophy and anthropology at the University of Northern Iowa, and then moved east where he earned his M.F.A. in printmaking from The Tyler School of Art, Temple University. Since 1985 he has taught drawing, printmaking, bookarts, and seminars on contemporary art at The University of Virginia.
Mr. Dass is married to Patsy Dass, a clinical psychologist in private practice in Charlottesville. Together they have two children, Erich and Adrienne, all grown up, miraculously.
